Overview
- Project 3 involves creating a recycling system that can isolate objects based on their material and dispose of them accordingly.
- The modelling subteam is required to design the mechanism that is responsible for lifting up a hopper to empty the containers and drop them off into their bins.
- The computing subteam is required to develop a computer program that controls a sorting system for recycling different containers. They then program a Q-bot to transport the containers to their designated bins for recycling.

Key Objectives
Constraints
Computing
- Sort containers into the correct bins
- Determine which materials are recyclable
- Allow the Q-arm to move into the bins
Computing
- Q bot must follow the trajectory line on the floor to return home
- Use a maximum of 2 sensors
Modelling
- Minimize the mass & materials of the mechanism
- Lift the hopper high enough to deposit containers
Modelling
- Hold max of 90g worth of containers
- Hopper can hold a maximum of 3 containers
- The actuator must be within the highlighted red area on the baseplate
- The mechanism must attach to both the baseplate and connecting plate
Final Outcome
Modelling
Computing
- Final Code (Main Function)

Team’s Work and Personal Contributions
Initial Brainstorming

Our group began by creating our own sketches using both linear and rotary actuators. We then compared designs using a design matrix and chose the design that scored the highest and matched our vision. We then chose to move forward with this design using the rotary actuator.
